A Ge: A brief introduction
b. 1948, Liangshan, Sichuan province.
As a member of the Yi ethnic minority group A Ge, along with other ethnic minority children, was entitled to attend the Sichuan Academy of Fine Art (SAFA). After graduating from the program, she was sent to work at the Chinese Artists’Association (CAA) branch in Sichuan.
Whilst her earlier works focused more on social themes, despite leaving her home and family at such a young age, her subject matter later on frequently referred to Yi minority life, the people and its aesthetic sense. A Ge's first series of prints as a professional artist were of her mother such as, My Mother and My Mother Is Learning.
A Ge has received prizes and recognition on an international scale, with her artworks having been included in severa lnational publications on Chinese printmaking. Her work has been exhibited in shows promoting the work of women artists in both China and Japan, as well as in events endorsing minority artists in China.
